This year, I had the opportunity to take part in the Spartan Beast in Bled, Slovenia, and I have to say it was one of the most beautiful, but at the same time, the toughest races I have ever run. If you are looking for a real challenge—both physical and mental—Bled is the place where you will find it.
22 km, 30 Obstacles, and a Swim in the Lake Right at the Start
The race was 22 kilometers long and there were 30 obstacles waiting for us. Already in the first kilometer, the organizers didn’t spare us and sent us straight into the icy water of Lake Bled—swimming right at the start was a great “refreshment” and set the tone for the whole race.
A Start to Remember
The start was truly epic for me—even before the gun went off, a group of drummers began playing, and their rhythm got me completely pumped up. It filled me with incredible energy and motivation for the whole race, and the atmosphere was absolutely electrifying.
Neverending Hills
The total elevation gain was 1,310 meters, so there was no shortage of steep climbs and technical descents. The Slovenian countryside is literally breathtaking—at many places I had to stop for a moment and look around because the views were really worth it.
Comparison with Bedřichov and Lessons from Preparation
I have to admit that the race in Bled was noticeably tougher than my first Beast in Bedřichov. Back then, I hadn’t run enough in preparation, which I tried to fix for Bled—I increased my running training and it paid off. On the other hand, after the 15th kilometer my lower back started to ache, which limited me especially on the climbs and descents. I realized that I had underestimated core training in preparation, which is crucial for such a long and hilly race.
What Does Spartan Mean to Me?
Spartan is not just about sports performance, medals, or results. It is a lifestyle that gives my life meaning. I enjoy everything about it—the amazing community, the unique atmosphere, the sporting challenges, and pushing my own limits. Every race is a new experience and a chance to meet inspiring people, move forward, and enjoy being active in nature.
Our Team OCR Veverky
I was also very happy with our OCR Veverky team, with whom we completed not only the Beast but also the Sprint. For all of us, it was a great experience and a great team achievement. The mutual support and motivation were a huge advantage, and it proved that obstacles are easier to overcome as a team. We are already looking forward to the Spartan Honor in Žatec in June, where the whole team will run the Sprint and Super.
What’s Next?
Another big challenge awaits me in July—the Spartan Beast Morzine in France. In my current preparation, I have made several minor changes and started to do more strength training, especially focusing on my core and upper body. I hope and believe that it will show in the race and I will manage the course in better shape.
